uploading videos to wordpress

Hi, I'm new to wordpress. I can do the basics and make a pretty webpage but we want to start adding videos of the children singing etc...

 

I had a video made on an ipad as a .mov file, it was quite a large file and wouldn't upload, I then tried to reduce the size but it still wouldn't let me. I then tried uploading a small podcast .m4a file. The bar with the play button came on the screen but no sound. Am I missing something or is there something preventing apple software being compatible?

The google searches came up as I should upload to youtube then embed the video to the website but I don't know how we feel adding our videos to youtube.

 

Any tips for me to add a video taken via ipad to our website?

I would strongly suggest uploading them to youtube. Add them as private listings so they're only accessible to those with the direct link and then embed. Saves you storage, headaches and gives you better cross-platform compatibility so it won't matter what device users are using to access your website.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I will have to look in to how to do the private listings and run it past the management. I wouldn't have thought of the storage limits.

I reencoded mine using handbrake to be small enough, about 50MBs, then uploaded the mp4, embedded using https://codex.wordpress.org/Video_Shortcode

My advice would be the same as most others. Upload the video to youtube, then embed the video on the wordpress site.This then has the advantage of saving storage space and saving on bandwidth.

And the disadvantage of random takedowns, ads, and youtube being blocked in a lot of schools.

 

On the plus side upload all your copyright abusing stuff there, and then you won't get fined.
