As Dave also answered yes, it will massively, for communication providers who have been waiting for Openreach to make Dark Fibre available over their network it will mean the wait will be significantly longer. I have just come off an Openreach call now, and without going into the specifics, Dark Fibre is not on their launch agenda ANYTIME soon (and certainly not in the next six to nine months).

 

There are of course other options if you can get them. Our DarkLight, Dark Fibre based service has been available for over eighteen months in over a dozen towns and cities (and goes quite a distance into the countryside in some areas too, for instance, Leeds goes up to Wetherby) and we have lots more towns and cities coming on in the next few months.

 

Then there is the option to use something called PIA (Physical Infrastructure Access), which is where third parties, such as an ISP or Altnets can pay Openreach to use their ducting, but pull their fibre through. It's not cheap but is sometimes better than long civils digs. Anyone using PIA could offer Dark Fibre, but if it were just a one off for a single organisation (school), it would probably not be cost effective.
