WDS, Windows 10 and creating the Distribution Share

I have a simple WDS server, running on Win2012R2.

It has hosted W7 images successfully for 3 years now.

Creating the distribution share was easy enough, as was the unattended xml files etc.

Creating the catalog for the W7 and W8 images was straightforward.

 

I am now wanting to image W10 machines and it is very frustrating!

It has imaged the machines happily but refuses to create the catalog file.

The error I get is;

 

This application requires version 6.3.9600.16384 of the Windows ADK.Install this version to correct the problem

 

I have tried this on different machines, all servers 2012r2, i have tried the different versions of the ADK and all to no avail.

 

can i use my original robe and unattended xmls?

How on earth do i create the Win10 catalog?

did you uninstall the old adks before installing the latest one?

 

tbh its a long time since ive used wds on its own id seriously have a look at mdt its free and gives you many more options for doing things than wds alone ever could

yes, i did uninstall and also setup on a new server too!

 

Will MDT allow me to image machines etc just like WDS?

you can but theres better ways of using it (if you are meaning capture an image rather than deploy one). i dont even make images anymore i just fire out the latest win 10 image and script install what i need and let mdt worry about drivers

Fair, but i like the simplicity of creating an image with all relevant software and then being able to sweep that out pretty quickly to a large number of machines!

you can do it that way as well you can use mdt to capture your preconfigured image and fire that out if ou want i just try and keep it simple and to me letting msi deployment/scripts do software is simpler means if i cant recreate a base image and forget to isntall x to it for example but its a matter of opinion which way is better

Sussed it!

 

You will need the Win 10 ADK form here https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/windows-assessment-deployment-kit

And the 1703 version of win 10

 

takes a while but eventually sets up and allows you to create the catalog file.
