While there is a Governor role in SIMS there is no functionality to assign that role to a person through the front end. It was for functionality in an additional module that wasn't ported across to SIMS 7. The best you can do currently is add them as either staff or an agent.

I'm not sure what you would want to give governors from SIMS or any MIS directly. I'd export, format and print/email any non sensitive reports to them.

Governors should not need access to SIMS. We are strategic, not operational. Governors work with anonymised data provided by the school. They never interrogate the data systems directly themselves. Think Data Protection and GDPR

For recording them for DBS checks and the like, they're simply volunteers

It might have been for the Single Central Record recording, in which I guess (but I'm not certain) you would add them into Staff and exclude them from the SWC.

I remember this being mentioned at a SIMS Update meeting a long time ago but can't remember the exact details of it. I guess it depends whether you produce your SCR from SIMS or you have some other way of recording and managing it?

You could add them as member of staff, but that's not quite the same as giving them system access. Within SIMS you can give known people (teachers, TA's etc) on the system access, or you can create an account without that person being known to the system. The only governors with access to SIMS should be the teacher governors.

But the question wasn't about giving governors access to SIMS, it was about adding them into SIMS with something like a zero hours contract which would tie more into recording them within SIMS to store details about DBS checks and produce a SCR report.

Don't you just put them in as volunteers?

That's what they are. They are not employees. The SCR will be wrong if you do it any other way.

That's what we do... nothing complicated.

I don't believe governors need to go through the DBS check either - Their details need to be on the school website along with their term and membership type.

Yes they do. All governors and academy trust directors have to do DBS on commencement of their appointment
