Back up recommendations

Hi guys,

 

Two servers each on a different site, on the same domain, running Server 2016 and multiple Hyper-V hosts.

 

How would you go about doing back ups?

 

So far I've been suggested external drives with BackupAssist and Hyper-V addon for full daily backups, swapped over each day, and then cloud storage for files only backups or a NAS in a different (part of the) building performing full backups then mirrored to the cloud.

 

What about encryption of backups?

How many Hosts? We use Altaro and they have the built in offsite backup feature perfect for site to site backups. Standard edition is under £300 for one host and can backup 5 VM's.

All backups will be encrypted.

4 on primary site, 3 on secondary site. Primary site has fibre, 100 down and up and secondary site has FTTC, 70 down and 20 up.

I always have these backups

 

:RAID (Not really a backup but at least one spare HDD in the RAID)

:Internal drive for nightly backups that are quick to recover from.

:SAN or NAS as far away from the server location wise but still in the school grounds for weekly backups. Use use SAN which is encrypted by the machine.

:Offsite backup for when things really go wrong, normally done monthly and driven to a safe in another location - Bitlocker on this one

:Second HyperV server with replication so if one server goes pop i can boot the other up.

 

:Two drives that get taken out of our our cool hidden safe in turn once every 3-6 months - Bitlocker on these too.

 

When we had multiple sites i had a small small SAN on each and we copied data weekly to each other.

 

With a slow up link you woud want to perform more regular incremental backups so its not having to transfer days worth of stuff.
