I've started following the instructions in this PDF:

http://www.itsnotaproblem.net/docs/Exchange_2k3_Restrictions.pdf

To block certain students from having external email access, the main stumbling block is that it asks me to apply the restrictions to the SMTP connector. The problem is my SMTP connectors folder is empty, and I'm not sure what info I would need from the LEA/other parts of the system manager to create one. Is it possible to apply the restriction to another part of exchange or will I have to bite the bullet and create a connector? I've never really "fiddled" with our exchange box before, and I'm worried about breaking the blessed thing.

You are in Exchange System Manager and you can see the Connectors Folder in the left navigation pane, but there is no SMTP connector showing? Does this apply if you log on to the server as different user with administrator rights? I had a an issue with some features not showing up when logged in as a domain administrator. They all appear when logged in as another user with local admin rights. I am no expert, but may be worth a try.

You would only have an SMTP connector if you routed mail to different places... the default configuration (or a configuration using a smarthost) does not requier one.

It's easy enough to add a SMTP connector for all your mail... it will not have an adverse effect.

That sounds like it, would I set the connector to route via DNS or would I have to set a specific server?
