Windows 2000 DC running file and print.

100% CPU occurs and task manager shows SYSTEM PID#8 is to blame.

IF I disable and renable LAN connection on the server it fixes it.

Has happened 3 times in the last month.

Any ideas?

i know you said its a DC running File & Print, but, does it run sophos becuase we had a similar problem on some workstations if you have then just reinstall sophos.

Hope this helps.

I can't see why disabling/enabling the LAN connection stops the CPU using 100%, that is really odd. What speed is it running at? 10/100 or Gigabit? You could try updating ethernet drivers.

As you're running 2000 server, have you applied all the latest fixes? i.e SP4 and the Update Rollup.

Yes on SP4 and all windows update applied - also done the Compaq Proliant latest support pack.

It's running at 1 gig.

Suggestions have been it's something rogue on the network...but I don't know....

I would try an update of the ethernet drivers and a server reboot. I'd also monitor your memory consumption.

I presume you've also explored the possibility of viruses and spyware too?
