Office 365 vs Office 2016

I have been asked a few times if the school can use Office 365 on the teacher laptops and tablets so they don't have to buy Office 2016 licences.

 

Last time I checked WSUS I also noticed there is now a section for Office 365 updates.

 

Is this now possible or is there a licensing reason which would mean they would still have to buy Office 2016 licences or a OVS licence for this?

Do they realise they're just shifting the licenses over to Office365 as a subscription instead?

I meant using the free Office 365 licences that are part of Office 365 for Education.

Is this using the Office365 Education Plus license? Because now you have me interested in doing this too... there must be some kind of catch here.

IIRC it's only valid on non-school-owned devices, and you must have a requisite Office desktop ovs / ees licence.

Thats my understanding too, but it would be useful to see where that is actually stated. Perhaps some hidden online T&Cs somewhere?
