More Projector Woes - The Black Blob

I'm presuming this problem is with the projector? Does anyone know what causes it and if its repairable or needing a replacement projector?

 

I've changed the lamp, but with no effect.

Physical restriction in the light path, dust perhaps?

 

What is the make and model of the projector?

As @JJonas said, we need to know the make and model really.

If its old and out of warranty, and you feel comfortable opening it up then I would suggest giving it a thorough clean inside. Particularly around the lens and any mirrors - be extra careful not to dislodge or move any mirrors though.

If its really old, you may be better off with a new one - We've been using Epson EB-X27 recently and they are very reliable, but come with 3 years lamp and product warranty and cost less than £300.

I've given it a good clean with compressed air without any effect. The unit is an NEC NP216, quite old.

That model ceased production in 2011 so its definitely old. The Epson EB-X27 would be a good match as its XGA and a little brighter at 2700 lumens.

That would give you peace of mind for the next 3 years as well.

 

Bear in mind though that the throw distance will be different so you may have to move the projector bracket.

Don't worry too much about the projector bracket , the Epson projectors have something called quick corner - makes installing them a breeze

Quick corner keystoning is a god send. Installed one yesterday. took 5 mins (after I managed to get the thing mounted on possibly the cr@ppest bracket known to man).

 

That blob to me looks like something has burned internally. Mirror, lens ????????? Doesn't look like the DLP chip. You get 'dead' pixels when they go.

Wasn't you on our site yesterday replacing a broken one was it ?

 

Re Epson service, I got in touch with them Tuesday PM about a totally dead X27 and an engineer was on site at 10am the next day to replace it

+1 for the X27... I'd take a guess at dust buildup on a mirror internally... Because of the heat and the age of the projector chances are it's baked on. That projector has seen its day come and go unfortch!

Epson all the way, no problems with 3 lcd and no texas instruments insight and can't believe Epson say nothing of quickcorner which is absolute genius !!

You may want to consider their interactive projectors 695wi (if you have the budget £1000+).

Yeah, that's a gonner on that one - Seen it a few times for NEC projectors (including 1 during a warranty period) - it's something quite a big issue, as NEC didn't repair the projector, but swapped it out completely.

 

Another one here who when using projectors, use Epson EB-X27s (and previously X11s), why all companies don't include something along the lines of Quick corner, I do not know!

That projector is only SVGA (800x600) though, hence why its cheap.
