Perhaps the rubber band broke.

I suspect in reality the techie who has admin rights to unmute the mike was having a sly ciggie somewhere and they couldn't find him.

If I was Huw Edwards I'd have written the headlines on my papers and waved them at the camera rather than just sitting there.

They had technical difficulties after the transitions went crazy and started randomly repeating themselves, so he was waiting for them to be resolved. Unfortunately someone forgot to put the notice screen up on BBC News so he was still live on air!

I feel sorry for the man - it's very obvious no one told him that he was on air during the difficulties.

Feeling sorry for him didn't stop me from laughing very loudly when he looked down, then raised his eyebrows at what he saw...

To me his demeanour at the desk suggested he knew they were broadcasting. He kept his eyes down and didn't engage with the camera or anyone behind it, apart from briefly acknowledging an off screen signal, until they were ready to go live then he just looked up and went for it as though nothing was unusual.
