Windows 10 - Start Menu Redirection - very strange issue

Morning all,

 

So i have bit the bullet and put Windows 10 (1703) on a small group of machines (15). I was losing hope and with it just being in my test environment, i just kept going back to the though of, "well windows 7 works".

 

Now that it is live, i am a bit more motivated to sort out all the issues. Which i have thankfully done! Except 1! I have 1 last issue that is causing me hassle, then i am there!

 

Start menu redirection!

 

For some reason, when a student logs into the machine, the start menu is not there. But when they log out and back in, it redirects fine!

 

It is such a strange issue! Anyone had this? Any ideas!?

So i have looked in event viewer and it shows as applying the policy correctly and says successful. However it still doesnt show the redirected start menu.

 

However with further testing, i have found that if i make a change to the redirected start menu (add or delete a shortcut), then it suddenly does appear! Im guessing no one has any insight on this, (going from the lack of replies). So i will keep posting encase someone else has this issue!

Can I ask how you redirected the start menu?

 

I've just started tinkering with it, as part of an overall bigger project to replace Win 7 with Win 10. I've started testing student accounts and am getting odd behaviour. If I delete the redirected profile of a test account the start menu builds properly. If I then log off and back on it's missing all the installed apps. Sigh...

We're using mandatory profiles and I've just been testing 1703. At first the start menu wouldn't open at all, but creating a new mandatory profile from a 1703 client has fixed this (a pain I know, but it didn't take too long and at least the start menu is working now!).

 

We're redirecting students' start menu and although it is being redirected in 1703, shortcuts for a load of UWP apps (that are bundled with 1703- Paint 3D etc) have appeared in addition to the normal redirected start menu. I'm sure I've had this issue before so will dig through my notes to see what I did last time.

@MJTayloronline I've looked into this a bit more, as redirection looks like the ideal solution for us. I seem to have the reverse problem, in that the first login is fine, but from second login the redirected part disappears. Also 1703.

 

Others have suggested this is caused by roaming profiles, so I'm about to test a switch to local profiles.

 

@dry There seem to be various solutions to removing these unwanted Windows apps e.g. removing them from the INSTALL.WIM with DISM, startup script hacks that delete/hide them. A real shame there isn't just a simple group policy switch.

Indeed. I'm sure I dealt with them before but the difficulty now is deciphering my notes to find out what I did haha.... I'm still holding out hope the latest 1703 admx templates issued by MS have got a nice new 'disable everything UWP related' toggle

There's a "Remove common programs list from Start Menu" option, but that's all I've found. And if it did anything, it wasn't much!

I found another GPO setting, Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components/Store > Disable all apps from Windows Store.

 

Testing now to see how well this works...

I thought I had cracked 1703 start menu but now I get the same "the reverse problem, in that the first login is fine, but from second login the redirected part disappears".

 

Am using local profiles - nothing in profile setting in AD.

 

Any ideas - only spent 4 weeks of my life working on windows 10 issues :-(

Which version are you using? 1703 has the 'Copy to....' button again which may be your simplest option. You may find this guide useful too.
