Updating OS X Server issues....

Don't know if anyone can help, but here goes.

 

Currently have Mac Mini Server (Mid 2012) running El Capitan 10.11.6 and OS X Server 5.1.5

 

Want to upgrade to Sierra (10.12.x - whatever latest version is) and MacOS Server 5.3.1

 

My understanding is I need to upgrade Server from 5.1.5 to 5.2 first (possibly via 5.1.7), then upgrade El Cap to Sierra, then upgrade Server 5.2 to 5.3.1

 

Problem is when I click update on Server app in App Store, the update button greys out as expected and the little rotating timer appears at top left of App Store, but nothing else happens. It stays like that forever not downloading, or updating anything.

 

Any thoughts on how to get it to download and run the update?

Before you do anything ensure you have a complete backup of the server.......
