We deliver different start menus for staff and students.

Students get a totally redirected start menu showing all shortcuts regardless if software is installed or not.

Staff have normal start menu plus shortcuts added by GPO so only shortcuts show for installed for installed software.

Just wondering how other people deliver their start menus

We redirect on Computer-Level based on System Builds, keeps it organised. Requires loopback but working with multiple images makes it easier from a management perspective. Allows us to only have shortcuts to things that are installed on the system.

With win 10 I ditched the native start menu as it's garbage (too unreliable and breaks with every build).

I use Classic Start and use GPPs to build the start menu based on user type and installed software. Works great.

Hi Sparkeh,

Would you have any instructions for delivering the classic start menu. We are currently on Windows 8.1 and use the XML/GPO method. Started testing Windows 10 but can't get the XML/GPO method to work.

Thanks

Sure, here is a good place to start:http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-10/163286-windows-10-start-menu-working-solution.html @Michael has done the heavy lifting for us :)

Thanks very much Sparkeh and @Michael

The instructions to manually install the classic shell manually, is the complete setup or just Classic Start Menu from the list:

Thanks again.

If you just want the Classic Start then you only need to install the Classic Start component (this is what I do).

Alternatively if you want to deploy this you can add a switch to tell it just to install Classic Start, so my commandline looks like this (note that this is for an old version so your msi name will be different depending on version used)

msiexec /i "ClassicShellSetup64_4_2_5.msi" ADDLOCAL=ClassicStartMenu /qn
