Printer reporting jam in tray 1 - we don't use tray 1 - how to bypass warning?

A colleague of mine informed me recently that the printer (HP LaserJet Pro 400 color m451nw) in her office had stopped working because of a jam in tray 1. Because of this the printer won't print anything until we clear the jam. We've both had a look and can find no blockage anywhere in the printer in the areas relating to tray 1. Tray 1 is used for envelopes and non-A4 sized paper so we don't actually use it. We are wondering if there is a way to deactivate tray 1 so that we can resume printing using the standard tray 2? We have never used tray 1 so it is very unlikely that there is a blockage there.

 

The only possible cause of the blockage that we're aware of is that the printer was dropped from an unknown height whilst it was being moved. I reckon the shock from the impact has affected in some way a sensor for tray 1 and that is where the "blockage" is coming from. I am ready to write the printer off and dispose of it and keep the toner in reserve for another colleague who has an identical printer so that we at least are able to use the toner up and not let it go to waste.

 

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to fix the tray 1 issue?

I suggest setting printing defaults to feed from tray 2 rather than auto. Check the printers setting both on the printer and on the driver. If it is set up correctly it shouldnt request a4 printouts from tray 1 at all unless specifically asked to by the user. Some printers you can disable tray 1.

Don't rule out that someone hasn't torn paper trying to remove a jam leaving a tiny fragment of paper. I have removed a piece of paper no bigger than my little fingernail before now from a tray one feed. Got itself lodged and scrumpled in the corner of the roller.
