Device for dyslexic students

Looking for some advice for a dyslexic student - last year the student was brought an e-pen to help her in lessons and we are now looking at buying something to record more of her lessons and something to allow her to also use audio books and internet for research. The request from the member of staff was 'iPad or similar'.

I am thinking something which can record clearly, possibly take notes by voice and read back, colour filter for the device to help her reading/researching.

What have you found to be most useful for dyslexic students? Any particular device, apps or services which you would recommend?

Depending on age / capability of student, you could use Read & Write or Dragon Dictate (or similar) for note taking & reading back. Plus, depending on their needs, you can change more settings in windows through personalization with regard to screen colour and menu fonts etc than you can on an iPad through accessability options. I'm just setting up an iPad for a five year old registered blind and there are limitation on colours and fonts with it. You can also use something like join me so student can see what's on the whiteboard / teacher PC.

Assuming the child's old enough to be helpful, we usually discuss with the student what works best for them and then pick something to suit. Often that's a portable device with dyslexic fonts and an automatically launched coloured filter program.

 

The main thing to remember is that something that works for person A may be useless for person B. When we had six volunteer dyslexic kids testing various bits and bobs, there wasn't anything that worked well for all of them.
