elsiegee40 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Daughter is moving into a house share with her new job. She's trying to sort out insurance for her personal possessions. The landlord has the contents insured, she needs only to insure her stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations for this type of insurance?
sippo Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 Surely, if the landlord has contents insured then she should be covered?
Achandler Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 It depends on how the house is rented, are each room rented indivudally between the landlord and the renter or is the house rented as a whole? If the house is rented as a whole, then you can get contents insurance across the whole place for everyone. If however, each room is rented individually then you have to get contents individually as well apparently (it is what I got told), your room would then also require you to have a suitable lock on it, a 5 lever one normally for indoor doors. My other half once got broken into at university and they refused to payout because they had contents insurance on the house, but each room was a seperate contract, and her door wasn't locked sufficiently!
elsiegee40 Posted May 19, 2017 Author Posted May 19, 2017 Each room is let furnished and separately with its own key. The communal kitchen and living rooms are shared. The landlord insures his furnishings. She needs insurance for her possessions kept in her room - laptop, clothes, etc
Joanne Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I would have thought any insurer that does contents insurance would be able to do room insurance. Looks like there is some useful info here: https://www.spareroom.co.uk/content/info-flatsharing/shared-house-contents-insurance/
elsiegee40 Posted May 19, 2017 Author Posted May 19, 2017 I can go to any insurer ... I was just wondering if any Geeks had recommendations given that there seem to be many in shared accommodation. People have strong opinions on car insurers. Maybe not on their possessions
truebluesteve Posted May 19, 2017 Posted May 19, 2017 I know Endsleigh do insurance for students accommodation so I suspect that they may well do it for other shared accommodation. The cover my son has for his room was good and pretty cheap so worth a try I'd say
