MS2011 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Hi I am looking to replace some edge switches. I have looked for hp 2920-48g-poe switch ( layer 3 ) but bit expensive or HP 2530-48G PoE+ ( layer 2 ). I want to know what is the best design for avoiding Loops . Thanks MS
Davit2005 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 (edited) 2530 (Layer 2) should be fine. Not too sure about pushing Layer 3 out to Edge although big campus networks may see the need for Layer 3 at the edge. We have a few 2530 PoE here now and haven't seen any problems with them yet. Loops can be a problem for any switch and can be avoided with Spanning tree but have a look at best practices/common mistakes. Edited May 18, 2017 by Davit2005
MS2011 Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Thanks Davit2005 ! We got roughly 700 devices connected to our network. Do you think 2530 (Layer 2) should be okay?
MS2011 Posted May 18, 2017 Author Posted May 18, 2017 Please someone can share with me what they are doing to prevent look on their network.
Davit2005 Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Enable Spanning tree on the switches to prevent loops but set the root switch to right priority rather than letting the switches decide them selves. Follow any best practices or most common made mistake guides and watch some YouTube :-) . 1
LukeC Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 We use the ho 2530 as our edge switches and they have been solid since install. I also enable hp loop protect on all access ports which shutsdown boths ports if it detects a loop i have simulated this and seen it work.
IanT Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 2920 switches are your gold standard HP edge switches, 10gig uplinks, stacking etc 2530 models should do you just fine regards to stopping loops, make sure you spaning-tree, loop-protection etc, take a look at this PDF: http://whp-hou4.cold.extweb.hp.com/pub/networking/software/2510-AdvTrafficMgmt-July2007-59914762.pdf 1
MS2011 Posted May 24, 2017 Author Posted May 24, 2017 Thank you very much for your suggestion and advice. Bought HP 2530 and configured. All working nicely.
