MLS portable Barcode readers

Does anyone have experience of portable barcode readers? Our librarian normally hires one but hit upon the idea of buying our own. For the cost of hiring we would save money within 18 months using the price MLS have published so it is a no brainer. My only concern is that their offering looks like an old device, I'm worried about compatibility with any other system, and the faint unease that they may be charging over the odds for it.

 

Are we able to buy any portable reader and it will be compatible or does it need special programming? Any recommendations?

I've asked our Librarian for you. She says...

 

"I’ve attached the MLS advice and compatible models Compatible models.docx – it does suggest that most models should be compatible though, MLS suggest that you contact the manufacturer before you purchase to make sure.
