DNS - (Same as parent folder) questions.

It is my understanding that any DNS entries that are listed as (Same as parent folder) are related to DC's on the network or are also known as glue records.

 

1. Should I make these static entries prior to enabling DNS scavenging???

 

2. As you can see from the screen shot we have a number of iP's listed with (Same as parent folder) but currently only have 1 DC which is on ip xx.xx.xx.12 Am I ok to delete the other entries?

In you forward lookup zones you should have:

 

Start of authority

Netbios names of your nameservers

IP addresses of your nameservers

All 'same as parent folder'

 

nameservers = probably your dc's unless you have some additional DNS servers that aren't DC's.

Deleting them wont do any harm anyway. The records will be created again at the first lookup - as long as you have more than one DNS server.

Sorry I should have put that this is a small primary school with just one server which is running AD DHCP DNS.

Same as parent folder I think relates to any DNS servers not just DC's

Usually but not always.

The (same as parent folder) relates to the domain name, DCs and Name Servers register that they are DCs and Name Servers for that domain (also stuff like SOA). However you can add other records if needed. For example we have a DNS zone for the hostname of our Sophos UTM with a record (same as parent folder) Host (A) so that the hostname resolves to the IP of the UTM.

In that case there should only be 3 'same as parent folder'

 

SOA, netbios, IP

 

Maybe it had an IP address change in the past or was built somewhere else then delivered without clearing it up.

 

I would run a DCdiag /test:dns on it first though the check the functionality.

 

 

In any case you can delete them and do a reboot. That will recreate them correctly.
