I'm looking for a hosting company for a new site I'm working on. My current provider doesn't support PHP 7, which I need as the site is based on Drupal 8. I'd also like command-line access to my virtual host.

Any recommendations? I was with Gradwell for a long time, but left after receiving what they admitted was terrible support. But that's the type of company I think I'm looking for.

If you want command line access I'd spin up a cheapo VM with DigitalOcean or Vultr and go nuts.

Otherwise, http://www.SimplexWebs.com. The guys behind this site are fantastic and I can say (having worked with them in the past) they tell the truth when they say they never oversell and run decent servers.

TSO Host

I use them for the school website and also for my web design company. The service is great and the support team have always be really helpful and knowledgeable.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I do have a Digital Ocean droplet sitting out there gathering virtual rust, plus some spun-down AWS entities, and may use one of them. The downside is that if I want to host mailboxes I'll need to do it all myself, rather than using the typical control panel vendor's servers. Plus I tend to trust shared hosts' security features, rather than relying entirely on my own abilities: I'm no real Linux guru.

I've used these guys in the past The Positive Internet Company | Home I've had both their shared and dedicated servers. They are not cheap but you get what you pay for.

They are now doing a cloud service ("PosiCloud"), where you can spin up VMs via a control panel, much like AWS or similar, and that's rather more affordable for their smaller VMs than their shared hosting.

Email: I use Migadu for email hosting - they take care of all the fiddly stuff for you, you cn have your own domain and set up users with accounts and so on.

Agreed. These or Vidahost - they're all part of the same big company so it makes no difference who you pick really.
