Advice moving from CJM to a cloud-based MIS

Theoretically, giving School Manager (or any Filemaker-based system) a web-based interface should simply be a case of enabling the web-based user interface on the appropriate database. I'm not sure if there are any complications involved in doing that, but it /should/ work. My plan here is to create a Filemaker server in the cloud somewhere (probably in an AWS virtual private cloud) to use initially as a failover server in case of on-site server failure.

 

Which part of West Runton are you in - Beeston Hall School, the Kingswood centre, or somewhere else?

We have a cloud services provider coming this afternoon to talk to us.

I will put it to them. Maybe a hosted filemaker server would be the way forward...

A "cloud services" provider could be pretty much anything - they might or might not be able to help you look at a new school MIS. Looking at pricing on AWS, I figured a remote domain controller and Filemaker server should cost around £50 a month in hosting charges, so at least you have a figure to compare against whatever they try to sell you this afternoon.

I have picked up the task of extracting data from CJM to transfer it to iSAMS. I haven't used Filemaker/CJM before and would welcome advice on how to proceed. I have exported pupil and contact information but am struggling with the rest.

 

CJM mention a link to iSAMS on their website, has anyone used this?

What format does iSAMS expect data to be in? I'm guessing your task is going to be to export some data from School Manager and re-format it to fit what iSAMS takes in. School Manager / Filemaker is easy enough to get data out of, either by running reports from inside School Manager and exporting a CSV file or via an ODBC connection or via their own XML-based query system. If this is expected to be a one-off operation I'd have thought running reports and exporting the results as a CSV file would be your best bet, maybe with a re-formatting step of some kind in the middle.

The data you want to extract will depend on what modules you have signed up to with iSAMS. I would let iSAMS handle the data migration. My advice would be to concentrate how and who will use the MIS.

For example reports to parents (printing templates, data capture templates ect...) and also decision like what needs to go on the parent portal if you decided for a parent portal..

When we migrated (Engage to iSAMS) we just exported all the data to CSV, tidied it up (as it was a mess in places) and iSAMS imported. I think we also gave iSAMS access to Engage to move over anything we had missed (can't remember really, all I remember is we had to spend ages in Excel making contact addresses actually make sense - i.e. the post code in the post code field instead of in Address3/town/county/country as the old data was all over the place)

I would let iSAMS handle the data migration.

 

This thread is a year old - I understand iSAMS now provide a defined migration path from School Manager to iSAMS, so it should just be a case of sitting back and letting them sort it.

True. New to Edugeek thought some else migrating to iSAMS might find it helpful, especially with 180 clients using CJM bought by iSAMS...
