Document Scanner

Hi all,

 

I'm in need of some advice, we are looking to get a document scanner for the office here for private documents rather than using the multifunctional printers which have Scan to Me (email) enabled which makes it secure already.

 

I have found these two scanners but I would like a opinion from someone who has used one.

 

Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500 Duplex Document Scanner

Epson WorkForce DS-1630 A4 Flatbed Scanner

I use the previous version of the Fujitsu ScanSnap (the s500?) at home. It's fantastic!

 

Having the sheet feeder is way more convenient and far faster that a flat-bed. The only downside is that you can only scan separate sheets, not books, pamphlets etc (unless you cut them up) so that might be a consideration. Let me know if you have any specific questions about it.

 

ETA: Didn't realise the Epson had a sheet feeder. The Fujitsu's paper handling is really good and has an ultrasonic sensor to detect double-feeds etc. I don't know how the Epson would compare.

We have some ScanSnap units here in Finance, and they're amazing. They scan both sides of a page at once then create the multi-page PDF for you, it only takes a second or two to scan, there's a multi-sheet feeder on the top, and the image quality is very high. I think things scanned by it can be treated as originals not copies because of the quality.

 

They're not cheap though, so depending on what you're scanning and how often, you might just favour a little flatbed scanner. We got rid of all our other scanners when we got the MFDs with scan-to-email.

Personally I would go Fujitsu but why don't you just set your copier to scan to a network folder secured to only said people can access it, that is cheaper than buying a scanner.

We've got a Fujitsu ScanSnap s500 in finance - old but still going. Extremely robust and simple to operate. The only downside is I haven't been able to get it to work with W10. I found this out a couple of days ago. Our junior decided to go from Win7 to W10 on the computer it was attached to, and when he found out the scanner wouldnt' work, he decided the best thing to do was disconnect the scanner and stuff it in a drawer. After about an hour of failing to get the scanner to work, I went back to Win7 and it's all fine.

For that sort of thing we go with the Fujitsu one every time. They're not cheap but you get what you pay for! The ones we have are duplex and scan both side of a page at the same time and are very, very, very fast! You just load the document in the feeder and within seconds it's on your screen.

We bought a couple of the Fujitsu ix500 scanners here and they're rock solid.

 

We went with flatbed ones prior to these and regretted every moment of them.
