ReverentCreature Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Hi I have a Windows 7 client that freezes on startup. It freezes even if booting in safe mode. Startup repair has not found anything. Tried a PXE build using WDS and it still froze in the same place. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
bald_pig Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 What driver was it loading when it froze during the safe mode boot?
ReverentCreature Posted March 29, 2017 Author Posted March 29, 2017 It stops on amdkmpfd.sys. I believe this is graphics related The computer is connected to a startech KVM so maybe that needs a new driver.

sted Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 take the hard drive out/disconnect it and try itagain see what happens on pxe boot
ReverentCreature Posted March 30, 2017 Author Posted March 30, 2017 PXE freezes on Windows logo/splash screen when hard drive disconnected and booting to PXE. What would this mean?
Fazza Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 You could try resetting the BIOS to see if that helps. Could be RAM also so try different RAM in the computer to see if that helps - I assume the graphics card shares the computers RAM which is why I suggested this.
sted Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 PXE freezes on Windows logo/splash screen when hard drive disconnected and booting to PXE. What would this mean? dead/iffy hdd sometimes it just needs diskpart run with clean or all partitions deleting. Ive found on occasion that that drive is in some way faulty also
Joanne Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 but if you swap everything and it's still doing it, could be the mobo.... but try all the BIOS suggestions first.
difinity Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 I'd run MemTest86 from a CD to check the memory. What client is it ?
ReverentCreature Posted March 31, 2017 Author Posted March 31, 2017 I tested without the USB devices connected (including mouse and keyboard). It booted up okay. Reconnected them. It booted up okay. Reconnected everything including the Startech KVM (VGA/USB) and now its booting up okay. At a total loss now as to what the problem is. Will keep and eye on it.

DalekSec Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 Sounds stupid, but have you reseated the RAM? We had a PC not PXE booting awhile back and it was a RAM reseat that sorted it
