possable DNS/DHCP Issue

when I do a Nslookup on my DC I get the static ip address and also 2 dhcp ip addresses.

 

im sure this should not be correct

 

if I delete the two dhcp addresses from dhcp will this effect my network?

 

I cant see why it should but something is not right

 

I know the company that installed the server had it on dhcp while they transferred data could this be the problem.

 

also in dns I have 2 entrys for our old servers as nameservers if I delete these do you think it may effect anything else.

Old servers should definitely be removed - assuming you're 100% sure they are not needed for compatibility or as a workaround for something...

 

For the multiple IP addresses, do you have a VPN setup, or perhaps the Remote Access role (not doing much). If so, take a look at IP settings, particular the DHCP settings in the sub section of RA.

Here's what I would do.

 

1. Jot down all the settings that you see - on paper, or in notepad.
   
2. Ping each server, using the IP address, hostname and FQDN - you are more interested in the IP address replies, but the others are for good measure, but you may get a response back from an old DNS entry. This is to make sure there isn't a real server tucked away somewhere that you don't know about!
   
3. Remove the entries that are known to be old and redundant
   
4. Run the Best Practise analyser on the DHCP and DNS roles - it will report if things aren't set to their best settings (some can be ignored)
   
5. Scavenge entries from you DNS, and DHCP - you may have to do so manually, but you'll need to reconcile forward and reverse entries.
   
6. IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS - this perhaps isn't so necessary, and will lead to a repopulating of the DNS cache of the server
   
7. 
   

 

 

Be good if others can chip in and see if there is anything wrong with these instructions before you fire them at your server

Could be VPN but could also be a 4 port NIC with all the cables plugged in (un-teamed) ?

as i am a wuss I will wait until the easter holidays to investigate this as I really don't want any downtime a week before we close for easter.

 

We have a broadband provider switchover at the end of the week so that is going to be my priority

I would love to rebuild our network from the bottom up and document everything but being a lone tech its just not going to happen.
