Hi all. I've seen a number of threads out there about using Firesticks for media streaming with Kodi and Mobdro. Has anyone here used a Chromecast for this? I can see the odd threads out there on using a Chromecast but before I waste my time or ruin my Chromecast I just wondered if anyone else here had tried it with a Chromecast and encountered any issues.

Cheers all :)

I use a Chromecast at home and the only issue I can see it having in an enterprise network is quite a sizable one: Anybody on the wifi can 'overwrite' the stream. If my housemate is streaming something from his phone to the Chromecast, it shows up on my phone. If I load up a video and select to stream it over the chromecast, it in-effect kicks him off and streams my phone. So basically you'd need your own wifi network just for digital signage.

You can't install Kodi on a Chromecast. It doesn't have the hardware onboard.

You know I've never really put any thought into how it works, someone bought it for me and I just used it. After a bit of reading I realise it's exactly as you say, nothing is installed on it unlike a Firestick it's just a device for retreiving or displaying content.

So I just stick Kodi on my phone or tablet and cast it........I think, not tried it yet :)

Cheers all.

Ohh you're not looking to use it in school? I got completely the wrong impression :D

Yeah, Chromecast just receives audiovisual information over WiFi. It's basically Intel's Wi-Di, but a bit more specific rather than meant to be used as a primary display.

Its main feature is to stream video by itself from http(s) sources. But there's a secondary function of receiving streamed video from Chrome tabs, and mobile screens. Doesn't work as well because they're both using the wifi AP, double the bandwidth

Yes that's how it works. Better than a firestick for apps because those that push ads dont then push them to the chromecast as well.

That's not how it works is it? The idea is that your phone / device works a a 'control' and directs the stream to the chrome cast. ?
