CCTV for home...

Can anyone recommend a decent CCTV system for home, preferably something decent for use during the night?

When I had a look at some at Maplins (I might be installing some at a business - personal job) they said the Lorex ones were slightly better in the dark than swann...

We've used Swann in the past from Maplins and Costco, good bits of kit and the more modern ones allow you to access on Smart Devices, which the parents like to do when they are out of town... or just don't want to bother going to one of the two monitors or a laptop with it installed.

I saw a tutorial on here (Edugeek) somewhere about using a fake camera housing and a Raspberry Pi with IR sensor camera as a CCTV kit. It looked like a lot of fun. Although probably more work than buying one.

Once again I'll recommend the Ubiquiti G3 cameras at a hundred quid a go!

I don't claim to be a CCTV expert although I did spend six months last year working at CCTV place. Swann stuff is cheap and whilst it does produce a picture, even their expensive cameras don't come close to the quality of IP cameras. I have Hikvision here, my 3MP camera was less than £100 and has zero image issues.

There were so many Swann returns, poor mains adapters burning up components inside the DVR and camera failures. The software on the DVR is also rubbish.

Hikvison cameras can use a PC as a recorder.

Just out of interest... why do you want CCTV OP? I'm getting a bit edgy because almost all of my neighbours have it. We just have a dog! Hahahah! I'm also of the thought that I don't really have anything really worth stealing.

By the time the burglars realise you have nothing, they've already smashed in your window/door, traumatised the dog and emptied your stuff everywhere.

It did, but the gf didn't like the knowledge somebody had been through her stuff and the dog was not the same after. And of course my insurance went up the following year.

Lots a problem in the area at present Joanne, burglary's and car vandalism. It's my home/ work address, so quite a bit of equipment stored at the address.
