My ATX power supply has no SATA power connectors so I have ordered an molex 4 pin to SATA adapter. This has no 3.3v but I understand that this is only an issue when hotswapping. Is this correct?

No, it depends on the drive: some require 3.3v supply, some don't. You'll find that most drives don't, because molex connectors don't supply one, but you need to check before plugging it in. The drive label should state its requirements.
