Windows 10 changing hard drive to solid state?

Hi there, I have a few personal laptops: non-domain which despite being just a few months old, are so slow to boot up. They have 8gb ram and i5 processor so well specced, but I wonder if the older 500gb hdd is taking a while to spin up.

 

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to switch the conventional 500gb hdd with a 250gb SSD without having to re-format and re-image the laptops?

This would take quite some time as they are set up with finger print recognition, links to Microsoft Live, which would all take a while to re-set up.

 

I normally use CloneZilla, but I am not sure it would work as I would be cloning from 500 to 250.

 

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use Acronis true image. It doesn't matter whether you restore the image to a smaller/larger/same size hard drive/ssd it will auto resize as necessary.

It would work, you'd need to shrink the partition using gparted down to less than 250gb and then use clonezilla. Once the drive has been cloned use gparted to extend the partition.

 

However im sure i took a bigger HDD and moved it to a smaller ssd using one of the options in clonezilla l, i forget which one but im sure a quick google will tell you what uou need to do.

I used Acronis to do this on a family PC a while back that uses UEFI/GPT. It worked, but it couldn't install major updates in Windows 10 (would fail every time). The process of imaging across somehow screwed up the OS or more likely the boot partition. I had to reinstall in the end. Bear it in mind. Done loads successfully that were MBR though.
