Update firmware on HP VMWare based server

Hi all,

 

Need opinions on the best method of updating the firmware's on my HP hypervisors.

 

I have VMWare installed on the disks (not running from a USB or SD card - soon to change)

 

 

Whats the best way to keep on top of firmware updates?

 

Boot a live Linux/Windows instance and do it using HPs smart updater or iso, or straight from the VMWare Linux shell?

 

 

How do you do yours ??

Using HPE OneView for vCenter HPE OneView for vCenter is a single, integrated application for managing ProLiant servers and HPE storage systems running VMware.

HPE OneView for vCenter provides firmware inventory and performs driver and online firmware updates for one or more VMware hosts using SUM and the SPP.

 

I need a no cost method though.

We had HP Blades at the last place and I had the task of updating all 24 blades. I found the HP Smart Update manager a complete nightmare and would not work reliably so ended up jus mounting the ISO via iLO and doing that way.

 

The actual iLO updates I done manually via the VMWare host CLI which was quite simple and you then knew when you were going to lose iLO connectivity.
