DCUK6 Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 After using Serif for a number of years it looks like they are now discontinuing the whole line and focusing just on image editing. Just started at a new school and was going to put this package in but not paying for software thats no longer receiving updates. Adobe is well out of over our budgets. Has anyone else got any recommendations? We need, photo and movie editing at the least throughout the site. Many thanks
localzuk Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Well that's annoying. We've just ordered 2 site licenses for it for our 2 middle schools.

Many thanks We use Coral Video Studio and Paintshop Pro, it's OK, installer is a bit rubbish.
DCUK6 Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 Well that's annoying. We've just ordered 2 site licenses for it for our 2 middle schools. Tell me about it, such a good package but they are still selling it but no longer releasing any updates according to their sales team.
localzuk Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 I'm looking to cancel my order now. I don't want to spend thousands on software only for it to be abandoned. 1
DCUK6 Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 That's what I though. Give them a call and see what they tell you. Really annoying for schools, seems a odd move considering how popular it is. They should have done the new "in" thing where they don't have new versions but once in a while they update with a new feature and just patch security holes. Once SCCM is finally working il be looking for a new package
Arthur Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 seems an odd move considering how popular it is. Serif make more money from their Affinity programs. Makes perfect sense to me. ^ At these prices it's more expensive than Adobe's Creative Cloud!
localzuk Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I need to find replacements for DrawPlus, WebPlus and MoviePlus really - those are the main 3 we use here. We've been seeing a variety of issues with DrawPlus files becoming corrupt, which is why we were looking to upgrade. Seems kind of pointless to upgrade to a package that isn't being updated though.
DCUK6 Posted March 7, 2017 Author Posted March 7, 2017 (edited) MoviePlus has been discontinued and is no longer available to purchase from our website. We are now focusing all our development efforts into the new Affinity Range - our next generation of professional graphics and photo editing software. Unfortunately we do not have any plans to develop a video editing application as part of that suite, at least in the foreseeable future. For more information about Affinity visit our Affinity website. www.serif.com/movieplus Back to trying to get moviemaker to install properly from scrips i think. Edited March 7, 2017 by DCUK6 1
Garacesh Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 WebPlus I haven't actually used any of the Serif package besides MovePlus, but Microsoft Expression Web 4 is free. Might be of use to you? Looks pretty similar to DreamWeaver so we might be able to use that here. Dunno about DrawPlus and MoviePlus though. We definitely need Pseudo-Photoshop and a decent Movie-maker. Saving grace is our license is perpetual so there's no immediate rush to get a replacement.
localzuk Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Problem with Expression Web 4 is the preview stuff requires IE9 or Firefox 3.6 to work. So even more out of date.
Garacesh Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Oh, really? Bummer. Haven't tested it, just knew it existed.
Fazza Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 What to get next? Nothing, we'll continue to use the Serif software that we purchased a couple of years ago. It hasn't suddenly broke and stopped working over night. We still use Adobe CS4 Design Suite from years and years and years ago - that too still works. Whenever a new version of Windows has come out we always test the existing software to confirm it works and the only issue (for example) we've seen with CS4 is that Flash doesnt install fully but we dont use that anyway so no issue for us!
localzuk Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 A possible alternative to WebPlus would be Xara Web Designer - seems to have a lot of the same functionality. No site license though. My issue is that DrawPlus has developed issues for us - the files randomly corrupt when pupils save!

Of course now there's a new version of Windows every 8 months

Saving grace is our license is perpetual so there's no immediate rush to get a replacement. One problem with MoviePlus is the feature unlocking (try to do anything needing codecs and it has to get a "feature unlock" from the Serif servers), if you do too much re-imaging you will find you go over your maximum unlocks and need Serif support to reset the count/increase it. They did this a couple of weeks for me with no problem but who knows if they will still even run the unlock servers in a few years time? I was also about to add some more MoviePlus licences so we could roll it out in the library after the PCs have been replaced, not gonna happen now. 1

We had this issue the other week so I contacted Serif and they gave me all the unlock codes for all the codecs so in a worst case scenario we can unlock them manually might be worth an email to their support - I know it's now legacy and unsupported but for something like this they might be willing to send you a quick email with the unlock codes. 1
mdrabble Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 Back to trying to get moviemaker to install properly from scrips i think. I have movie maker deploying with SCCM, when I get back to school I'll post the command line for installing it if that helps.
mdrabble Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Im using Windows Movie Maker 2011 - the command line I am using is wlsetup-all.exe /AppSelect:MovieMaker /q Hope that helps.
PotNoodleTech Posted March 8, 2017 Posted March 8, 2017 Oh dear that is bad news. Really - there's nothing else available that provides the same software at the same price point!
DCUK6 Posted March 17, 2017 Author Posted March 17, 2017 Ive just stuck the also discontinued windows live move maker into the MDT image for now. Not yet found another package similar to Serif
localzuk Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 MoviePlus X6 is the final version, so there's no new licenses for that anyway now I don't think. I ended up getting the new versions of the rest, after cancelling. They halved the price, so it was worth it anyway. They also promised that there would still be bug fixes and support. 1
JATSO Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Windows Movie Maker and Paint.net here I also load up Gimp for those that request it.
Garacesh Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Windows Movie Maker and Paint.net here I also load up Gimp for those that request it. I pushed Paint.Net out as standard when I rebuilt everything last summer. It's better-than-MSpaint-but-not-nearly-as-complex-as-Photoshop (how they compare for functionality I don't know, but there's a noticeable difference in usability for our lower end kids). It's been fairly well received by the few groups that actually need to do image editing. Would definitely recommend.
mavhc Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 I found paint.net terrible for photo manipulation, I assume there's a load of plugins that would help, but no idea which. How do you deploy GIMP?
