mdrabble Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Ok.... numpty question time..... how/where do I find/enable UE-V and anyone have any idiot guides to setting up
mdrabble Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Never mind...... lack of coffee moment - powershell enable-uev
mdrabble Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Right... having had a coffee, enable ue-v and reread this thread.......... Can I create a Mandatory profile as normal and then use UE-V to allow users to save personal settings? Then in the AD Profile settings point to the Mandatory Profile and let UE-V take care of the rest....... Does that sound about right or am I way off base?

Arthur Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Never mind...... lack of coffee moment - powershell enable-uev UE-V can also be enabled via Group Policy. Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft User Experience Virtualization > Enable UEV 2
Spenketh Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 I'm not sure if this is an issue anybody else is having but we have an issue with an account writing back to the "Settings Storage Path" that has been entered within Group Policy. When checking the logs within Event Viewer it shows that the user settings are trying to write back to the shared network location of our Mandatory Profiles rather than the "UEV Settings" network share that has been set within Group Policy. We use different mandatory profiles for different users (staff, students, guests) with the desktop/start menu shortcuts being placed within AppData for each profile so users only see the programs they need access to. Our problem is the Settings aren't getting saved to the UEVSettings share specified by the "Settings Storage Path" GPO under User Config and we can't rely on using the default profile as it has not been put in to our W10 build and we need a different desktop/start menu for various users. I'm a bit confused so apologies if I'm missing something obvious
mdrabble Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 I've just come to look at making a new manditory profile for Windows 10 and realised I have never ever created a manditory profile before. I've alwasy inherted systems so never needed to make one before. Anyone kind enough to share the steps steps for W10 Manditory profiles Cheers
Spenketh Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 (edited) I've just come to look at making a new manditory profile for Windows 10 and realised I have never ever created a manditory profile before. I've alwasy inherted systems so never needed to make one before. Anyone kind enough to share the steps steps for W10 Manditory profiles Cheers This may be helpful Please be aware if you copy the unattend.xml from his blog in the description that the formatting pasted incorrectly and I referenced his video to make sure it was correct line by line. I think I had to replace all the quotation marks and there were a few extra characters that didn't belong if I remember correctly! Edited March 17, 2017 by Spenketh 1
mdrabble Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 What windows 10 version are you on? 2016 LTSB Enterprise
dta7203 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 My team is going UE-V. I will admit that documentation is rubbish, but I have finally hashed it out. It does improve log in times, but has some teething issues with MS Outlook 2013
timbo343 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 2016 LTSB Enterprise Try this.. Login to a machine as an administrator. Go into Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Advanced Tab > User Profiles - Settings > Highlight "Default Profile" > Select Copy To > Browse to a location to where you want to save this profile > Under Permitted to use, click Change and add Everyone > Click OK to copy the profile to the configured location. With the profile copied, browse to the location and change NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN. There you have it, this profile can now be used as a mandatory profile. If you'd like to take it further, you can set the permissions on the folders within the profile so that only staff and authenticated users can read. I found that authenticated users had to be part of the profile... ive spent days trying to perfect it. Also, include a copy of the TILEDATALAYER that is created when a user logs on and put it in*Profile*\AppData\. We found this helps with the start menu tiles around school. I will be looking at UEV once i find or someone creates a decent documentation on it. Hope this Helps. 2
timbo343 Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 @MrKJLS have you got time to do a quick setup guide / idiots guide to get this working as the net doesn't have anything that's worth reading?
Popular Post MrKJLS Posted March 17, 2017 Popular Post Posted March 17, 2017 @MrKJLS have you got time to do a quick setup guide / idiots guide to get this working as the net doesn't have anything that's worth reading? Yep. We managed UE-V using the Computer Policies. We have the following enabled: Enable UE-V: Enabled First Use Notification: Disabled Settings Storage Path: \\your-fs-srv\UEVStaff$\%username% Synchronise Windows Settings: Enabled (This is where you would pick what Windows Settings you want UE-V to sync) Tray Icon: Disabled Use User Experience Virtualization (UE-V): Enabled After configuring the computer policy, we made a GP Scheduled task to register the templates with UE-V (In Windows 10 1607 it doesn't do automatically). We setup the User as NT Authority\SYSTEM to run the program detailed below, as staff couldn't run it due not having the correct permission level. This is what we have the triggers set to: This what we set the actions to: ^These will only apply to Windows 10 1607 or higher as UE-V is built-in. 5

Thanks for this.. I guess the UEV msi was installed to all machines too?
MrKJLS Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 Thanks for this.. I guess the UEV msi was installed to all machines too? For Windows 7 Machines, we deployed it out with SCCM. For Windows 10 Machines (We only run Enterprise 1607), it will get enabled using the group policy as its built into Windows 10 1607. The UE-V Agent is replaced by the UE-V service. The UE-V service is installed with Windows 10, version 1607 and no longer has to be deployed separately. Performing an in-place upgrade to Windows 10, version 1607, on user devices automatically installs the UE-V service, migrates users’ UE-V configurations, and updates the settings storage path. mdrabble Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 So had a quick look at UE-V with Mandatory profiles, which seem to be the thing most people are looking at and I am struggling with the start menu (as most people appear to be!) How do you get UE-V to give users the same start menu? or am I barking up the wrong tree on this bit?

Spenketh Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 We give user's there start menu though the start menu xml in group policy. How do you deploy your shortcuts within the typical "All Programs" style from previous Windows operating systems with a Mandatory profile? We have the shortcuts on the right side of the start menu deployed through the start menu GP but this doesn't affect the list of shortcuts on the left of the start menu.

We have the shortcuts on the right side of the start menu deployed through the start menu GP but this doesn't affect the list of shortcuts on the left of the start menu. The start menu is redirected using folder redirection, then we point the tiles in the XML to the redirected start menu items.
JasonNVSD Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 We have been using UE-V at our place and it works like a dream. Ok, I'm jealous. Have you tried customization for third-party applications? I'd be interested in how it behaves with complex lab software like Adobe CC or Autodesk ECSU.

I'd be interested in how it behaves with complex lab software like Adobe CC or Autodesk ECSU. We don't currently have any customization for third party apps like Adobe CC. This is something we are planning to look at a later stage. We just wanted to get the base bits working first with Windows 10 and staff Windows settings roaming.

Adobe CC stores most of its user settings in files (not XML formatted). I learned a painful lesson that those files contain hardware-specific settings, so if you try to use them on another machine, you will have problems.

You can capture application settings using the UE-V Template Generator. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/mdop/uev-v1/installing-the-ue-v-generator We prefer to use Group Policy if we can to pre-customize apps before the end user using them.
mdrabble Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Mandatory profile now work with redirect start menu - still having issue with the start menu xml layout So I'm leaving it for a bit to look at software deployments to take my mind of the start menu issue for a bit. 1
