faza Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 HI All, Im having a moment!! Is there a way of bulk sharing folders. I want to share pupils home directories is there away i can do the whole lot at once or do i need to do them individually. Faza
tosh74 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 you want rmtshare (google for rmtshare download) to create the shares and cusrmgr to bulk change the home folder path for the accounts HTH
faza Posted March 3, 2008 Author Posted March 3, 2008 But the folder already exists as it automatically creates the home directory for the user when you set the user up.
tosh74 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 But the folder already exists as it automatically creates the home directory for the user when you set the user up. rmtshare will then take the existing folder and share it (ie existing folder is e:\Home\Students\Year1\Studentname and share it as \\servername\studentname$ ) Is this what you are looking to do ?
faza Posted March 3, 2008 Author Posted March 3, 2008 How do get ther correct permissions for the share such as the pupil owner full control
tosh74 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 I'm assuming the home folder is the same as the student's logon name ? If so re-direct a DIR to a text file. Import the text file to Excel (put header name in and remove the columns you don't need) You now have a basic data file to with which you can create a mail merge with. Basically you will create a big batch file that will create the share and set the share rights for each student rmtshare syntax is here http://www.ss64.com/nt/rmtshare.html
GrumbleDook Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 After you have worked on the share permissions you should also work on the NTFS permissions. XCALCS is good for this.

A gotcha of using xcalcs is if the users rights are not put in alphabetical order (ie System:F Admin:f User:F) then you may need to go through each folder's properties and allow the system to sort them out. I would suggest using the xcacls.vbs instead. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825751
m2d2 Posted March 3, 2008 Posted March 3, 2008 But the folder already exists as it automatically creates the home directory for the user when you set the user up. I think the whole idea with Windows 2000/3 Server is that you should be able to create the user folder and share it in one fell swoop. You have to define a root share high up enough so it covers all the user folders. That way it is then possible to do a map under root to only expose the required folder. However if you've already created the folders then you may need to do something like this cd e:\Home\Students\Year1 for /f %d in ('dir /ad /b') do cacls %d /e /t /g %d:f && net share %d$=e:\Home\Students\Year1\%d /grant:Everyone,full
