Bitlocker to go - OS compatibility?

Hello All

 

I have a quick question about encrypting USB's and which OS will read Bitlocker enabled usb devices.

 

I have used bitlocker to encrypt a usb on a windows 10 pc and testing compatibility across multiple OS's that I can my hands on with a view to sourcing standard USB's which I will encrypt before distributing to staff. I want to know whether the USB will be readable across the common OS that our staff our likely to have on their computers.

 

I have already tested the usb on the OS that I have at my disposal. so if anyone can fill in the "???" or have any input would be greatly appreciated. the ones I am more concerned about is home OS and mac as the majority of staff will likely have them

 

Windows XP - NO (I anticipated this but was just curious. lets face it there will be one person who has a WXP machine)

Windows 7 Home - ???

Windows 7 Professional - works

Windows 7 Enterprise - works

Windows Vista - ???

Windows 8 and 8.1 - ???

Windows 10 Education - works

 

Mac OS's - ????????????????

I was under the impression that all editions of windows from 7 onwards could *read* bitlockered devices, but only ultimate and enterprise could *encrypt*.

 

I don't think anyone else's OS are able to read it.

For Mac OS you need a 3rd party tool.https://www.m3datarecovery.com/mac-bitlocker/

It does work as our DT dept use it here.

Trying to limit the work carried out by the end user. I don't want to have to explain that they have to disabled the security feature to allow installation from anywhere else other than iTunes?

I have no idea about availability on itunes as we downloaded it directly from their site. Its not an app for IOS.

My only advice to the user would be to stop being a skin flint and upgrade.

so really the only concerns looks like it will only affect users accessing the files on mac os without having to do some giggery pockery

Linux users can use FUSE + Dislocker to open up Bitlocker encrypted drives.
