I always park in gear, even if the ground is like a billiard table. If you drive an automatic, you put it in park and it locks up the gearbox. Same as a manual. Dad told me that if somebody rams into your parked car (which has happened to me a couple of times) your car doesn't get shunted into somebody elses, so you don't cop a claim against you.

How does one define a hill as uphill or downhill?

 

It's not the hill that is defined, but the direction the car is pointing in - if the nose of the car is pointing UP the hill, put it in first, so it can't roll backwards. If the nose of the car is pointing DOWN the hill, put it in reverse. ;P

Doesn't matter which gear 1 or rev, in cold countries you don't use the handbrake, as they freeze on.

I've been taught this.

 

Can't see much of a problem so long as the handbrake is applied before putting it in gear- so that the strain is still on the handbrake but being in gear acts as a failsafe. Happy to be corrected though!

 

When I learned to drive, I was taught this too. Ditto for the 'If you get hit by another car' comment. The only reason I don't is because I have a paranoia that I'll forget and smash into someone when I try to turn my engine on with the gear engaged and the clutch not depressed properly lol

I *always* park and leave it in gear. It's just an extra failsafe. I have occasionally forgot in a hurry and lurched forward into the wall a couple of times many years ago.

Putting the car into gear dosn't stop the car from moving just makes it harder (Think of how you bump start a car), but leaving it in gear dose help. Somthing else you can do is tern the weals to face the kerb. So if it dose roll it will roll into the kerb.

Hmm, yes and no leaving a car in gear will stop it. Although @thebatman is technically correct I will say this try pushing your car in first you will not do it and you will struggle to find an incline steep enough to move the entire drive train and compress the pistons! (not impossible just not probable) and you bump a car out of gear by depressing the clutch, when you have forward motion you release the clutch and transfer the energy in to the drive train to make the compression (a bit like the starter motor!) and if you have to bump its 3rd or reverse.
