Configure Outlook for network users

Has anyone managed to set it up so that when someone logs on their outlook profile follows them. Is it as simple as storing their mailbox files on their network area?

 

We have a Win2k3 network but the email runs from a UNIX server.

Can you not just used folder redirection so it stays on the server anyway? I don't use outlook so I can't remember the specific folder that needs it.

Ive not had to tackle this myself but I have seen examples of this scripted in places although that may just deal with initial profile creation....

Outlook Web Access seems to be the preferred method of granting Exchange access without any faffing around.

Thats what we do. iirc the PST file is generally held in the Local Settings area of their profile so giving them roaming profiles won't work.

Yes, the .pst is in %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Similarly OE uses a path under \Local Settings\Application Data\

I have been dealing with users of Outlook Express recently on two sites and have redirected their mail stores to a network share. You can't put a network path directly in OE for the mailstore, but there is a registry hack (& you then move the mail folder manually).

Presumably there is a similar fix for Outlook.

Or you could give them Thunderbird, which uses a path under %userprofile%\Application Data\ that can be allowed to roam. 8)

We use Exchange, but we used the M$ Office Customization setup and we store an Outlook.prf, which is copied over onto the user's machine at startup and should* match the user details when Outlook's opened.

 

*I say should, but it throws a wobbly when we have students with the same name. Our setup needs a lot more thinking over, mind.

We have the pst file stored on staff H:.. worked fine until Head started to keep all the email since noah decided it was going to rain a little bit and had to reach a compromise with their 500mb+ pst file being held on the local C: and backup every night... on the bright side next Aprill we get a nice new exchange server.. :twisted:
