itwasntme Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 (edited) Education Pro Plus was deprecated according to the last few microsoft licensing reps I've spoken to. Recently changed o365 tenant due to school name change and MAT change and was disappointed that that license was no longer available. The names of most of those seem to change recently anyway, its now Office 365 A1 for faculty (/students) and Office 365 ProPlus for faculty (/students) but Office 365 A1 Plus for faculty (/students) seems to be the one deprecated. OT Are there clear, good justifications for deploying o365 rather than o2016 across the network? I assume that WSUS's 'Office 365 client' is the product covering office 365 suite? snagrat Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 There are some good instructions but really to do it you need to use Device Base Activation but you can only that with the Plus license as far as I know
mullet_man Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 This is what we have in terms of licensing on our tenant. Am under the assumption that the O365 version has all the latest features and is updated monthly, where as Professional version isn't updated with new features. And some point the professional version will stop working with O365 accounts, not sure how true that is.
mullet_man Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 There are some good instructions but really to do it you need to use Device Base Activation but you can only that with the Plus license as far as I know I followed some instructions and it didn't work unless I was going wrong somewhere? Which guide was you using?
mullet_man Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 https://sysadminedu.wordpress.com/2017/01/07/step-by-step-guide-to-deploying-office-365-pro-plus-with-device-based-activation-with-sccm/ This is the guide am using but am confused at the section of logging in a student and registering the licenses? Has anyone who has got this working let me know who the name ends up being on who O365 is registered to? Does it appear as the same user on every machine? Or does it register for each person who logs in?
snagrat Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 It will register against the device name. In “Users” in Office 365 we now have 400 devices listed
jamesrhart Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Hi, Just wondering if you managed to get Device Based Activation to work, we have OVS-ES and the pro plus licenses but keep getting an error that we don’t have the Education plus license, MS are telling me to go to the reseller and the reseller is saying they can only supply the free pro plus and sending me back to MS. Has anyone in the UK managed to get the correct license added?
abaxter2 Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 We have it running here, but had signed up when the Office pro plus was still free for schools, it is no longer free to sign up for! It was first called "Office Pro Plus for Students" and if you already had this like me than the name has changed to: "Office 365 A1 Plus for students" I do not think you can buy "Office 365 A1 Plus for students" as this name change was just for tenants that who had already signed up for Office Pro Plus for students and faculty. For Office 365 Device Based Activation I believe you will now need: "Office 365 Education E5" student licences: https://products.office.com/en-gb/academic/compare-office-365-education-plans I am unsure if you get this via your OVS, but I can confirm for Office 365 Device Based Activation to work, you will need studnet licences. (Licences that allow students to download and install the full version of Office on their personal devices) 1
jamesrhart Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Thanks for the information, we’ve got Office via the OVS-ES agreement it just seems that MS make everything so difficult and you always end up getting told different things by different people (MS, reseller etc). I will keep pushing on both sides and see where we end up.
abaxter2 Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 You could always try a trial of "Office 365 Education E5" and while the trial is running test Device Based Activation, if that works and least you will know what licence you will need. Trial of Office 365 Education E5: Go to: Office 365 Admin Page > Billing > Purchase Services > Select: Office 365 Education E5. Guide of device based activation: http://boards.microsoft.com/public/prism/80710?token=f55452094b It is important to note that you will need an Office 365 Education E5 (Student Pro plus or whatever silly name MS give it!) licence for each device you want to activate.
jamesrhart Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Sorry for the delay, thanks for the replies - I'm just trying to work with an MS contact to hopefully get this resolved!
JRowley Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 We've not had much luck to be honest, Microsoft bounced it back to our supplied and initially said they couldn't help at all with the license, after a long period of back and forth it's now back with Microsoft, but not made a lot of progress.
psydii Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Would ensuring that "student advantage" was on the agreement and then deploying O365ProPlus with the "shared computer activation" config option not solve the problem?
snagrat Posted November 2, 2017 Posted November 2, 2017 Microsoft told us they can’t do anything about it and it is automatically assigned through their systems. Not sure the shared computer activation allows more than 5 personal activations though does it? 1
abaxter2 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Every computer you activate via the "shared computer activation" creates a user account within office 365 / Azure, so uses one licence per device, example if you have 10 office 365 A5 Student licences and you activated 10 computers you would use all 10 licences. This means that you need enough licences to cover all the computers on site that you would like activated via the shared activation and also enough licences to allow students to install office 365 pro on their personal computer. So if you wanted to activate 10 computers via the shared activation and also allow 10 students to install on their personal computers you would need a total of 20 licences. The shared activation does not share licences - it creates an account for each device.
snagrat Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Does the end user need to be signed into the Office 365 client for it to work? With SSO this isn’t too much of an issues but some of our customers do not use SSO
abaxter2 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 No the end user does not do the activation, the end user just uses office the same way as normal
snagrat Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 The sounds alright. But now I’m confused by the difference between shared access and Device Based Activation
snagrat Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Just reading up on Shared Activation and it seems the User does need to sign into the Office 365 client being it word/excel/etc. This is an issue where some users do not have an Office 365 Account. With Device Based Activation there does not need to be a user signed in for it to work
abaxter2 Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Yes that is correct as far as I know it: Device based activation = device is licensed and activated Shared activation = user based activation
