So was anyone else on the Wildlands closed beta this weekend?

I was and I'm a bit concerned that the release is only a month away:

  • It needs a lot of polish, the scenery looks beautiful from afar but when you're crawling through the bushes and tall grass it looks very last gen.
  • Vehicle handling is poor, nothing feels very weighty and the complete lack of rudder control on the helicopters is baffling. GTA 5 has it spot on for this type of game, just use their handling model.
  • There is no real cover mechanic that I've noticed, you just crouch behind stuff and hope you don't get shot when you poke your entire body out to get a shot off.
  • If you play alone you get 3 AI bots but if you play with a friend you can't add a couple of AI bots to bolster your squad.

On a positive note, I did have an enjoyable experience with it and I'm pretty sure I'll be picking it up come March because the game-play is definitely there especially when you have a full squad of 4 friend playing and you can all perform different tasks to recon and take down a target.

It would make so much sense to use The Division cover and controls, the number of times I ended up going prone when I wanted to jump over something because the controls on Wildlands are the opposite from The Division.

The Bots were a bit pants in that respect but you could tell them to attack on the action wheel which seemed to work in situations where stealth was compromised.

The open beta starts tomorrow on all platforms for anyone wanting to give this a go. it's available to pre-install on the Xbox store not sure about other platforms.

Played a couple of hours of the open beta today.. It's enjoyable, but I don't think I'll be buying it. With no endgame or PvP it doesn't strike me as a game that will have a lot of longevity or replay value. It's more of an open-world single-player game like Assassins Creed that's had multiplayer tacked on top of it.

I think if you enjoy the PvE aspect of The Division and similar games then this is a great tactical game that gets better the more player you have in your squad, but I agree the lack of PvP will hinder it's sales.

For me the lack of PvP is an up side to be honest as there's not half of the game that I won't play.

Have also seen somewhere that they'll be PVP for the endgame... could just be rumour though.

Fantastic in a team of four, surrounding compounds using air support, co-ordinated attacks... Single player, well, the AI sucks.... But it does have promise...

Until I see official confirmation of that (and an overhaul of netcode), I'm going to doubt it. Game runs off P2P. PvP on P2P connections is a terrible idea.
