Windows 10 Spell Check not working

Windows 10 has a feature under Settings -> Devices -> Typing to allow autocorrecting of misspelled words as well as highlighting any it can't autocorrect. This is meant to work in Internet Explorer and Edge.

 

Strangely, this doesn't appear to work at all when connected to our SWGfL. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks, but those registry settings are being applied, it just refuses to work, happens on multiple machines.

all made no difference. Spell checking all enabled in the control panel.

 

It applies to all my users - I get frequent complaints about there being no spell checker in Edge. I've been using Win10 Edu here for over a year and had just assumed that Edge and IE had no spellchecker.

 

Win 10 Education, various builds up to 1709.

 

Has anyone fixed this?

If you do dism /online /get-intl Is the default OS language en-us? If so you need the en-gb Lip I think. Unless you reimage with the international ISO/WIM/Captured Image. Home PCs probably just fetch the Lip fro.. Windows update. If you using WSUS I think you have to enable Features on Demand. You may have to download the Lip from the MSVLC.

The control panel Region & Language shows that English (United Kingdom) is already installed. Why is this different to what DISM reports above?

 

Anyway I've download the language packs ISO from VLSC and manually installed en-gb lp.cab with DISM. It fails saying that the specified package is not applicable to this image.

 

In WSUS I've enabled Language Interface Packs, Language Packs and Feature on Demand. The LIPs are for 'minority' languages (like Welsh) - there are no English LIPs.

 

I'll try approving and en-gb language pack in WSUS and see what that does.

I've approved the en-GB Language Pack in WSUS. It still won't install. WSUS reports the en-GB LP as needed by the client, but the client's Windows update reports no updates are available, and doesn't install it.

 

I'm wondering if the LP is the correct approach.

 

I've compared DISM output with my home PC where the Edge spellchecker works perfectly. On a computer with UK spellchecker working:-

 

Default system UI language : en-GB 
The UI language fallback is : en-US 
System locale : en-GB 
Default time zone : GMT Standard Time

so they're quite different: Default system UI language, UI language fallback, Installed language(s).

 

I just can't see how to change it. The GUI control panel says that English (United Kingdom) is already installed, so it disagrees with dism.

I hate to say it... but the problem seemed to go away by itself for me. Though this maybe because our filtering system has changed to user based and less filtering policies are effecting staff.

The problem here is the machines have been built using the US iso and configured for UK English. As well as needing the Language pack for UK English, you also need to install the UK 'language features on demand' which are separate to the Language pack, you really only need the Basic one for spell check, but since you are doing them you may as well install Handrwriting, OCR, Speech, and Text-to-Speech as well.

 

I actually downloaded the ISO's (Multi Language)for the Language Features on Demand and the actual Language pack and took the cab files that I needed and deployed them to affected machines(Batch file and using DISM for this one time fix for me). This worked a treat. the names of the cab files are fairly descriptive for example 'Microsoft-Windows-LanguageFeatures-Basic-en-gb-Package'

 

Obviously, using the correct ISO to build images and machines means this issue does not occur, use the International English ISO for UK builds, lesson learnt by me!

Actually... that is very likely as well... initially I did install the English version and not English International. Though, when it came to 1703, I did something sneaky and downloaded the English International ISO and ran setup over top of English. That might have been why it started to work...

That is why it indeed worked, when you run the setup over the top, it changes the system language, I actually did this on a straggler not 1 hour ago, because it is a different language it prompted me and must do a complete reinstall. It only lets you keep your files. If you use the correct ISO it installs all the Language on demand features for that language automatically. If you use the US ISO then all the Language on Demand stuff is US as well, even though you put the UK language pack on. You either need to do as suggested and enable the on demand features in WSUS, or get them from MS updates Direct, or Push out the Cabs manually.

Brilliant - obvious when you know how.

 

I've downloaded the English International ISO and used MDT to deploy that.

 

It works - Office365 is now spellchecked and in proper UK English. Color becomes colour.

 

Strangely on the EduGeek site it only checks the first couple of words - that doesn't matter for now.

 

MDT customsettings.ini needs to have:-

 

SkipLocaleSelection=YES
UserLocale=en-GB
KeyboardLocale=0809:00000809
SkipTimeZone=YES
TimeZoneName=GMT Standard Time

 

I've never bothered with the International English ISOs before.

 

Now I need to find out how to apply the Features on Demand to convert the few botched US English machines I've got.

It drove me mad for a while too. You need to find the right language pack for the Win10 build.

I found it pointless to install LPs anyway - it didn't work for me. I solved it by running setup.exe from the International English Win 10 media. This installs the right en-GB edition over the en_US edition and fixed the spell checker and updates to latest version at the same time.
