quiet_andy Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 I've been trying to get Smoothwall to send Safeguarding notifications via email. I have followed all the guides I can find and when I go to settings->Output Settings and use Send test to it will email me. But even though I have it set to email me alerts everyday for every users for all the safe guarding categories I do not recieve any alerts. What am I doing wrong? I have set Mail relay in the Email tab and configured the group to send.
siuko Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Can you post a screenshot of how you have notifications setup For me I was very silly and in the User field I put my name (which would only send safeguarding for what I had been searching for) Once the smoothwall helpdesk told me to leave the top user box blank (shows as everyone greyed out) it worked fine
Gurtlush Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 have you set it up under reports : safeguarding : Notifications ?
quiet_andy Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 Yes, reports->Safeguarding->Notifications set to everyone, daily, all and sending to group IT Support. I can send a test from settings and groups to all users within the group and it works fine. But just not getting the reports on a daily basis.
Gurtlush Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 and under reports : settings : groups IT support has the correct people in it?
quiet_andy Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 Yes, that's how I have been testing the email output to our group.
Gurtlush Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 (edited) it sounds like it's set correctly. Assuming nothing stupid like Emailed notification frequency is set to monthly etc etc. i would delete and recreate all the settings. Edited January 16, 2017 by Gurtlush
SW_DavidNewton Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Hey quite_andy, What is your email host provider?
quiet_andy Posted January 16, 2017 Author Posted January 16, 2017 We use Office 365, but just been using the simple relay option.
SW_DavidNewton Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 That was going to be my suggestion. Have you tried running a tcpdump and checking to see if it is sending anything out of the smoothwall?
SW_DavidNewton Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 Ah after reading over your posts again I can see that. So its the automated reports that are not sending. Try re-creating the notification settings and letting it run again. If it still doesn't work here I would recommend trying to create another email group with a single email address in it. Test the settings on this and continue from there. Have you checked spam/junk folders to make sure it wasn't getting marked?
quiet_andy Posted January 18, 2017 Author Posted January 18, 2017 I've tried recreating the notifications and also made a new group with only my email and still no notifications. Is there a way of testing if the report is actually being ran?
quiet_andy Posted January 23, 2017 Author Posted January 23, 2017 Still stuck with this, I have got other reports sending to me on a daily basis but not the safeguarding ones. Any one got any ideas? Is there another way to schedule the reports?
MYK-IT Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 The Safeguarding feature within Smoothwall is (still) really lacking in many ways. The Safeguarding reports can only be selected to be daily, weekly etc. but the time that they are processed cannot be chosen. Nor are they listed within the 'Scheduled Reports' (Reports > Scheduled) area either. Why the Safeguarding reports cannot be selected, criteria chosen, scheduled and run within the Reports section, I do not know??? For example, we have a scheduled, weekly Safeguarding Report (which works fine) but this report does not even list the URL's in question; just the category! Therefore what do you if you want to investigate this? Run a Reports > User analysis > All blocked activity for a specific user report, as there is no Safeguarding specific reports?? In this instance, luckily I run daily reports too (which are more detailed) which I had available to refer to. Our Smoothwall is due for renewal / replacement this year; hence attending BETT this week to see what they, and other companies have to offer... I don't want to replace Smoothwall but if the Safeguarding/features and cost is better with an alternative product; then with diminishing school budgets I may have no option. I've seen a couple of demos of Sonicwall and, in respect of the 3rd-party FastVue reporting that comes with it, this alone demonstrates how behind Smoothwall (currently) are in relation to Safeguarding reports.
MYK-IT Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 Still stuck with this, I have got other reports sending to me on a daily basis but not the safeguarding ones. Any one got any ideas? Is there another way to schedule the reports? REPORTS > Groups Group name: Click Name: Email Address: Ensure Enabled is Click Click REPORTS > Safeguarding > Notification Click User: Send notification: Select Safeguarding ruleset: Send notification / alert to email group: REPORTS > Output settings SMTP (Email) Output System Enter your SMTP Server details here. We just have and values entered. As mentioned, you can send a test email adhoc, but the time / day of week that the Safeguarding reports are sent; they can not stipulated. For reference, our reports seem to be generated / sent around 4am (and Monday's for weekly reports) Not sure if this help you at all, but hope it does (in some way).
quiet_andy Posted February 2, 2017 Author Posted February 2, 2017 Amazingly after having the reports setup for a month and them not working, we contacted Smoothwall and without us doing anything the reports started working. They are really hard to read but at least we are now getting them.
SW_DavidNewton Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 @quiet_andy by hard to read do you mean jumbled text or just a lot of information?
quiet_andy Posted February 2, 2017 Author Posted February 2, 2017 We get a lot of ~'s and colour information appearing in the report. Example below.
SW_DavidNewton Posted February 2, 2017 Posted February 2, 2017 Thasnk for the info. I'll get this over to the right people.
