Retrospective values for stolen equipment

Hi, does anyone know if there is a quick and easy way for me to find out what some older equipment may have been worth at purchase.

We had a couple of really thick burglars in one of my schools yesterday afternoon. They managed to break through three securing wires for laptops and stole them. There was an unlocked iPad docking box full of 8 iPads right next to them, but they didn't take them! They did however bag an iPad which was on another table.

 

I wanted to get some estimated costs of what we would have paid for the items, but the laptops are from before my time and we have a new finance manager in the job now, so she can't easily find the orders.

 

Does anyone know how I can find out roughly what we would have paid for them when they were first being sold? Obviously, I can easily find out on ebay etc what they would be worth now, but the insurance will be looking to know roughly what we paid for them when we bought them. They will have all been current models, not sale ones.

I was going to suggest they maybe left them because they knew iPads can be GPS tracked, but strange they took one and left the rest!

 

Have you tried locating it? (either on Meraki (etc) or through the Apple account?).

I know, exactly?! Could understand them not taking them for that reason, but they took another. I think they must have missed it in their rush.

 

I also agree, would rather be looking at cost to replace, but I have been asked to get some ideas on what we paid. I guess it is covering all eventualities. You never know what these insurance companies will throw at you.

No they don't, despite my recommendation to do this back in the summer.

I only help them once a day per week. At my own school, I have cost paid, invoice number (internal), order number (internal), Supplier etc along with all of the usual asset register stuff, I also keep all copies of whatever the bursar has for any orders I do. I can pick out an order in seconds. All schools should be like this, but funding is the issue I guess. Most places don't have the resources to have someone do all of that.

Aren't things like this entered in FMS? (I'm no expert in this, but one school I work at recently had a projector outage, had lost the paperwork and we needed to check the purchase date. I'm sure they found it in FMS?).

No, not as far as I have seen. They have a really old version of RM Finance. No doubt if and when they upgrade, they will do. Pretty basic stuff tbh, I am quite surprised at the number of places that don't seem to be doing it.

 

There was no requirement for it to be recorded at my main school but I did it as I am organised and for the sake of spending an extra minute on each order, have saved myself bags of time when things like this happen.

A great majority of the places I work at do not record these details. It is very basic: Make, Model, Asset No, Location.
