My Maths is telling staff to re enable flash when it gets disabled

Just had an email explaining how to re enable flash when it gets disabled by default in most browsers over the next few months.

 

While it is easy to enable I was hoping to fully move away from flash for security reasons and probably would not have enabled it for the staff.

 

MyMaths have been talking for years and years about migrating away from flash and as they are behind most other companies and still not migrated they have decided to email the schools with info about re enabling flash after it gets disabled later this year.

 

Maybe I am just in a bad mood today and should not worry.

The thing that really gets to me is in the email they make out its all because technology is moving on, nothing about the fact that for 6 or so years Flash has been a security risk.

That is mad. They are probably a fairly small outfit programmer wise, and their team are struggling to transfer or are simply sticking their heads in the sand. If a new product was presented to me to approve now and it used Flash, it'd be rejected (unless it was essential and incredibly good, which is unlikely!) Companies should be moving on.

 

I transitioned our in-house sites away from any flash content nearly 9 years ago as it was going that way then.

That's another issue. I did reject it about 4 months back but the deputy head said it must be fine as other schools are using it, he then purchased it anyway.

To be fair, we used to use it for a while and we still use other flash based content. I've yet to meet a single School that has suffered "security" problems because of it. In fact when I've ever talked about risks that have happened it's been email attachment based. It's not like we avoid using email because of the risks. Only my experience and the IT people I know.

 

Still I do hate the reliance on it not just because of the kind of security problems that exist but other issues regarding older/newer versions and tablets...

Haha we have exam boards whose software entirely depends on Flash, even worse we've had to downgrade the version to get exams to run [emoji58]
