New Google Classroom metrics

Good news for those of us using Google Classroom.

Just had this email from Google.

 

You may have seen the recent announcement that Classroom now supports metrics in Admin Console. This will allow you to better understand how Classroom is being used in your domain, and better support teachers and students in their use of Classroom.

 

As an administrator, you can now access the following data:

 

Daily, weekly, and 30-day active users for Classroom Active classes, i.e., classes where a post or comment has been created in the past 14 days, Number of classes created, Number of posts created, by teachers and by students

 

Moreover, you’ll be able to view, for specific users, their last active time, classes created, and posts created. Check out this quickvideo.

I wet my pants when I read that. Our staff love classroom but I feel like I'm bashing round a dark room with my hands held out looking for a light switch. This should help to monitor usage.

Have been fumbling around with API tools to form any picture of what's happening inside the black box up to now, which is like exploring a cave with a match.

Yeah, it's a welcome addition, but what I'd really like as an admin is a way to see and access ALL of the classes without needing to rely on the teachers to invite me.

It's rubbish compared to how I imagine the feature we'd all like to see would be, but there is a sort of back door way to see any class. Check out the GAM command line tool, which uses the API to allow you to add any user as a teacher on any class.

We have managed this (or rather SalamanderSoft have on our behalf) by using API's. If you use Salamander then it's worth talking to them about it.

We user Salamander and we can add ourselves to classes when we need to see things and remove ourselves straight after.
