I have a Sever 2012 R2 server with a strange disk space issue.

If I highlight all the folders (including system and hidden ones) on the data drive it shows a total of 18.1GB

However, in my computer and when you right click the drive and go to properties it says that 53.0GB has been used.

What else could be causing this? All recycle bins are empty and shadow copies are NOT enabled, so where it is getting the extra space used from?

So I ran a disk space tool and turns out that even though it wasn't registering from the folder properties, the tool picked up that the missing space was in fact in the system volume information folder.

I'll just re-format the disk to clear it all out, but anyone know why this has occurred?

Has it previously been setup with deduplication enabled?

System Volume Information folder being large could suggest that VSS is writing into there but it is not being deleted. Is it being backed up by Veeam by any chance?

No I've only ever done file level backups from another server to this one.
