msmpeng.exe anti-malware

We have a PC which runs really slowly when opening files, a check of the activity shows very high CPU demand from msmpeng.exe This is apparently part of Windows Defender and there's plenty of advice about disabling it. The problem is, it already is turned off! Any ideas?

What OS? Are you running SCCM? Where are the files stored and what sort of files?

Ah, yes. We are running SCEP. All the references I found only talked about Defender, so I assumed SCEP uses something different.

 

So, the next question I suppose is why might it be so resource-intensive on that one PC?

You can cap the processor (although not hard drive) usage through policies from the SCCM server.
