Redirected Desktop and Start Menu

Looking at this again under Windows 10 EDU.

 

A little confused as to why when I apply a basic Desktop Redirection Policy the same as I have done with Windows 7, when I stop applying the policy the desktop is still redirected?

 

Is there anyway to stop this as it makes testing very difficult!

 

I'm sure with windows 7 when the policy was disabled or removed the user got their standard offline desktop.

Have you got 'leave contents' under policy removal behaviour?

I noticed this when testing on W7 the other day, and I had leave contents set too so I assumed this is why its leaving the start menu when the policy is removed. I found if I removed the users local profile it reverts to the standard local desktop.

What version of Windows Server are you using? Have you tried doing a GP update?

OK so seems I was wrong about windows 7

 

I just created a new OU and test student user, I applied all our standard pupil policies and logged on to check all was good.

 

I then disabled the desktop redirection policy and the desktop was still redirected. Group Policy Results Wizard showed the policy not applying.

 

I deleted the test profile from the PC (registry and C:\users) and logged on again, this time the desktop was not redirected.

 

I enabled the policy again and logged on and the desktop was redirected as expected.

 

Again, if I disabled the policy the desktop was still redirected.

 

Is this by Microsoft design?

If you change the removal behaviour to redirect to the local user profile, presumably it will revert to the local one, although I havent tested yet.

When I remove our redirection our desktops go back to local ones.. Have you got these on ?

Change it in registry?

Hmmm now that is unexpected. Have you linked it again but maybe to a user that hasnt had the policy previously applied? It would be interesting to see how that behaves.

Thanks, no I did n't but these appear to be COMPUTER policy options.

 

I'm applying my redirection policy bases on users so not sure if this is applicable...

 

Presumably I would I have to create a new Computer policy with these options?

Apply the redirection to the computer OU you want redirecting. I use AD groups and assign the redirection based on being a pupil or staff member. Edited November 29, 2016 by DavetheITguy

Oh I see.

 

I've not done it that way.

 

I apply the redirection policy at the User Level, which when I set it up made more sense...so no matter where students or staff logon - they get redirected.

 

Why does it make more sense to apply this policy at the Computer level?

I apply it to the OU so it only affects the computers in that OU. I use AD groups to apply different desktops and start menus to staff and pupils. It's pretty much live as well if I add a link it appears instantly on the desktop or start menu. I have structure to my desktop and start menu redirection,

main block > room > Staff > Desktop

main block > room > Staff > Start Menu

main block > room > Student > Desktop

main block > room > Student> Start Menu

 

Ad groups are connected to this so if they are in student group they will only get a student redirection.

I've also done it this was as certain rooms have specialist software that others don't. It looks nice if they don't have unavailable links showing.
