[ipad] IPad Renewal?

Just interested in knowing a couple of things:

 

1) For those of you who have zero or few IPads, do you intend going down this route?

2) For those of you who already have gone down that route, do you intend restocking once they have reached the end of their natural lifecycle?

 

I ask merely because my impression from what I read is that their time has come and gone, that schools have moved on to other things - either back to laptops or on to Chromebooks, etc. Just wondering whether that was valid or simple heresay.

We used to give them out to all teachers, but only a subset of them use them regularly. I would say its about 20%.

 

I won't be renewing them, they are just a fad really although I did see some good uses in PE and drama lessons which I hope will continue.

 

We already give teachers laptops, so I don't really think they need multiple devices.

As a school we began life with 20 iPads (iPad 2) (an impulse buy because other schools were doing it). They then got smashed and damaged and were replaced with inferior tablets - Hudl, and they went down like a lead balloon with teaching staff.

 

Fast forward to this academic year, with a new HT, we have bought all teaching staff, HLTAs and Cover Supervisors iPad Air 2. The new HT is clued on and wanted them to be well managed effectively, so I suggested an MDM solution: JAMF Pro, to which the HT agreed. Previous regime were all about cheap and spending the bare minimum wherever possible. Anyhoo, I am at a stage now where for the first time I am happy to have iPads in school. If we went completely 1:1 I wouldn't even batter an eyelid. I envisage that in terms of refresh cycles (adopting 4 year cycle) we would go iPads over and over again.

Another point to add is we also implemented Foldr. Staff use their iPads to access their home drives as well as other user areas and now produce work using their iPads than they do on their laptops.

Monitor usage stats with your MDM, ask teachers who use them a lot if they're worth £x, only replace ones that are used and useful.
