Should I install Virus software on our new host

New'ish to the World of virtual servers (primary school) and in the process of install a Windows 2012r2 Hyper-V host that will have a couple of virtual servers running on it.

 

Along with installing the virus software on our VM servers should I also install it on the host which will only be used as a host and I want to keep as clean from extra software as possibly?Thanks

I wouldn't see the need to install AV on a host if it was just used as a host for VM's and was not used for ANYTHING else.

 

If you do decide to install AV then make sure you follow any exclusions for files/folders. I'd also would not install with any running VM's.

If the HyperV host is on its own subnet behind quite restrictive firewall rules i would say you can get away without it. If the HyperV hosts network adaptor is configured so its on the same subnet as the rest of the network i would say yes, you would only need something like a new Blaster Worm on your network and the HyperV host will be infected too unless the firewall rules are very strict and the worm does not exploit services on the ports you have allowed in and out.
