Moving SIMS Data onto SSDs from another server

Hi

 

I have a Dell VRTX 3 blade server as my main virtualised hosts, the VRTX has SAS Drives inside. I wanted to move the SIMS Data onto SSDs, so as part of my new Archival server I put in 4 x 480GB SSDs to run in RAID 10.

 

Has anyone else done it this way?

 

I am looking to work out the best way of presenting the SSDs to the VRTX.

 

Should I present it as a CSV to the Cluster? Therefore store the VHDX on it?

Or, should I present it directly to the VM? So the SQL Data files are stored directly on the physical drives?

 

Whichever way, has anyone implemented it this way?

I would put them on the VHDX. For something like SIMS that would be fine, it also makes this flexible in the long run.

 

Just to note, SIMS isn't support on Server 2016 yet.

The SIMS VM is running on Server 2012 R2, I need some way of using the SSDs in my cluster without physically putting them in the VRTX

Depends on the iscsi link between the servers. I wouldnt want the link to be the bottlenech when you could achieve greater speeds with DAS

There isn't any iSCSI links on the storage, its all directly attached to the 2 different chassis.
