Backup's onsite and offsite

Hi, We am after some advise on how others do backup's both onsite and offsite and how we should do ours. We have two sites in the trust.

 

Current Solution:

 

Site 1:

Onsite - Vmware Data protection this is stored on a freenas box that is mounted to the hosts and is located at the other side of the school. The freenas server will be around 6 years old now, so it getting on.

Offsite backup - Provided by a UK company, we pay 4.2k per year of 5TB of storage. This only backups file shares.

 

Site 2:

Onsite - Vmware Data protection this is stored on an old RM nas box that is mounted to the hosts which I am not sure how old it is as it was bough before we supported this site.

Offsite backup - Provided by a UK company, we pay 1.1k per year of 500gb of storage. This only backups file shares and sims.

 

 

What we would like:

We like vmware data protection as it works fine for us and does not cost us anything extra as it comes part of our vmware licence.

The offsite backup is currently costing us around 5.3k a year for both sites and with a shrinking budget we would like to get rid of this, current contract is up next month.

 

We have thought about getting two new nas boxes such as a synology nas and having vmware data protection appliances replicate to each other so we would have site 1's onsite backups replicated to site 2 and the other way.

 

Questions:

Has anyone on here done a vmware data protection site to site replication?

Would you replace vmware data protection with somthing like veeam? Can it do site to site replication?

Or would you do it a diffrent way. We would just like to not have to pay 5.3k every year.

 

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you decide to go down the NAS route (which I would personally, given you have two sites, just make sure you have some kind of hard offline backup too) Synology can do replication between two different NAS at two different sites so long as they have network connectivity.

Have you got a remote part of the school you could have some space? That way you could backup, replicate to the remote part of the school and then replicate that to the other site. That way you have an onsite off-site (incase of the school burning down and your internet line being down) and a offsite offsite (incase your whole site is nuked from orbit).

 

We use Veeam and we just use the onsite off-site as we have a building that is well away from the main building. We are looking at an offsite offsite repository for security but it isn't high on management priorities.

Still using LTO6 tape backups on-site, all encrypted, FULL backup every night for data files.

One set of tapes is stored off-site in the event of catastrophic event.

2 servers rooms at different parts of the building so can replicate between them. Quickest way for backup/restore of data rather than relying on internet line.

all VMs are backed up using Windows Server Backup and a script runs to keep the last 3 days worth of images.
