I'm guessing they think that people aren't grasping the concepts of the film, though I suspect that only people who are going to see it anyway will be watching all these clips they're putting out rather than the new converts they obviously hope to make.

I was thinking the same. I don't think I have ever seen so many trailers.

As much as I want it to do well, I'm afraid I'm going to agree. I'm still hopeful that it will go down well with pre-existing fans, but I don't think there are enough of those to make it a huge hit.

Apparently ME was the biggest spend on TV spots in the US recently (beating out Aquaman) and apparently more people than normal watched (or at least didn't change the channel/look at the epg etc) the spots.

 

Still not feeling the buzz, though .

Sounds great, and using Stephen Lang as the opening narrator shows promise for the ending of the series (if they get that far) staying the same as in the books.

Mortal Engines review – Peter Jackson's steampunk Star Wars stalls

 

Mortal Engines was originally a YA dystopian adventure novel from British author Philip Reeve, published in 2001, the first of the “Mortal Engines quartet”. Among its many fans is Peter Jackson, who has now turned it into a tiringly frenetic and derivative fantasy-adventure movie, co-producing and co-writing the adaptation with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Making his directing debut here is Jackson’s former storyboard artist and visual effects supervisor Christian Rivers.

 

The film is basically a steampunk Star Wars, with a bit of low-octane Gilliam and Gaiman on the side. By the end, in fact, the resemblances to George Lucas’s great creation become so distractingly obvious that it is difficult to credit that it isn’t some kind of intentional homage.

 

Currently 38% on RT (similar to Divergent).

Yeah, the review embargo has lifted and they aren't good - though I do feel that many are complaining borrows from earlier adaptations of books where ME was published first but filmed later, which is kinda unfair. I still think it will be a treat for book fans, though sadly one that won't lead to "A Darkling Plain" . I won't know until Tuesday :(.

 

RT can do one. I hate that it's held as the ultimate arbiter of a film's worth. The recent Tarzan, which I loved, is at 36% and I thought "A (New York) Winter's Tale" was magical, but it's at 14%. If a film sounds interesting to you, go and see it folks.

Was in the local Waterstones at the weekend and they didn't even have a display of the books, just a few shelf copies (and none of the first book there).

No 4k UHD telly in our house, nor likely to be soon - so doesn't bother me . Tesco only had the DVD when I checked.
